South Korean women’s volleyball finally ended its losing streak in the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) Volleyball Nations League (VNL) and secured a valuable victory.
The Korean women’s volleyball team (ranked 43rd in the FIVB rankings), led by Fernando Morales, won the fourth game of the first week of the VNL at Maracaranginho Gymnasium in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on the 20th (Korea time) with a set score of 3-1 (25-19 23-25 25-16 25-18).
With three points, South Korea ranked 14th out of 16 countries, beating Thailand and Bulgaria, which have yet to win.
It is the first time in about three years and 31 games that Korea has won on the VNL stage since the match against Canada on June 15, 2021. It is also the first victory under Morales, who has taken the helm.
Before the game, Korea had 30 consecutive losses in the VNL. Starting with consecutive losses in the last three games of the VNL in 2021, Korea suffered the humiliation of all losses in 2022 (12 losses) and 2023 (12 losses). This year’s VNL also saw its consecutive losses to China, Brazil, and Dominican Republic, extending its losing streak to 30 games.
However, Korea finally secured the victory against Thailand by gaining the upper hand in blocking (12-8) and managing errors (13-25).
Ace Kang So-hwi (Korea Expressway Corporation) scored 22 points, the most between the two teams, while Jeong Ji-yoon (Hyundai Engineering & Construction) and Park Jung-ah (Pepper Savings Bank) also led the offense by scoring 16 points each. Middle blocker Lee Ju-ah (IBK Industrial Bank) contributed to the team’s victory by scoring 11 points, including five blocks.
South Korea, which finished the first week of the tournament fresh with a victory over Thailand, will move to Arlington, Texas, U.S., and play its second week from the 30th.
