Round 38 of the PL was held on Tuesday (Korea Standard Time). While Sheffield Wednesday (16 points) at 20th and Burnley at 19th have already confirmed their demotion, Luton, which had given them glimmer of hope, became the last relegation team by losing 2-4 to Fulham. Even if they had won, they could not stay because Nottingham Forest, ranked 17th, won 2-1 against Burnley at the same time.
The three teams that were promoted last season fell to the English Championship (part 2) in just one season. It is true that the team that just came from the Championship has difficulty adapting to the PL, but Burnley and Sheffield had their own experience in the PL. Last season, Burnley came up with a command of the Championship under Vincent Kompany, and Sheffield was promoted to second place. On top of that, Luton, who rose from the fifth division to the PL for the first time in nine years, was also worth expecting a sensation.
The reality was harsh. Sheffield was not competitive at all in the PL. The disgrace of losing the most points in a single season with 104 runs clearly speaks to this. Burnley suffered all season as coach Kompany’s ideal did not work in the PL at all. Rather, Luton showed his potential with timely pressure and sharp set-piece attacks, but he failed to stay due to lack of strength in the second half.
The points cuts between Everton and Nottingham were also not a variable. Everton succeeded in staying despite the fact that a total of eight points were deducted and Nottingham four points were deducted. As time went by, Everton were ripe for organizing under Sean Dyche, and Nottingham had a decent performance with three wins, three draws and four losses in the last 10 games of the season, as if cutting points were the driving force.
It is the first time in 26 years that all three teams that were promoted were immediately demoted. The last time Bolton Wanderers, Barnsley and Crystal Palace, who were promoted to the 1997/98 season, all failed to stay.
