Macau casino regulator talks with ops on smart games

Macau’s casino regulator said some senior officials had a meeting with Macau’s law enforcement police and security teams of six casino operators on March 13 to discuss issues including surveillance systems and “smart” game tables. The information was shared in a post on Saturday on the regulator’s WeChat social media account.

The Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau, a casino regulator, is known by its initials DICJ.

“The judicial police and DICJ have asked game operators to continue updating surveillance systems within their venues, and achieve more comprehensive management with technologies such as increasing smart game tables,” the post said.

It is aimed at “enabling casino operators to work with the government’s e-administrative functions while increasing the efficiency of their management,” it added.

The report also noted that at the meeting, the parties discussed initiatives for the “smart DICJ” approach.

The talks included the scope and challenges of cooperation on casino surveillance and information transmission technologies.

Recently, several Macau operators have indicated their plans to use Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) game tables.

On March 14, Bill Hornbuckle, chief executive and president of MGM Resorts International, the majority shareholder of Macau casino concession company MGM China Holdings Ltd., told an investment forum that RFID chips used by the group’s Macau businesses for several years were generally a good way to track the play of foreign customers as well as monitor the financial integrity of games.

Mr Hornbuckle added that overseas players visiting Macau casinos do not like to enter rooms specifically designated for them, even though the Macau government’s plans offer casino operators the possibility of a low tax on total game income for those customers.

In a post on Saturday, the DICJ noted that casino bans were imposed on 2,302 people by regulators in 2023. The tally included 1,468 people who law enforcement officers reported engaging in illegal currency exchange activities.
