‘Golden Globe favorite’ LG to take home most ‘golden gloves’

After 29 years of winning the Korean Series, can the LG Twins find a place at the Golden Globe Awards?

The KBO announced a total of 81 nominees for the 2023 KBO Golden Glove on Monday. Only the 10 best players in each position will be honored. There are 28 pitchers, seven catchers, three first basemen, five second basemen, five third basemen, eight shortstops, 20 outfielders, and five designated hitters.

LG had a total of 12 nominees. Kelly, Choi Won-tae, Lim Chan-kyu, and Plutko (pitchers), Park Dong-won (catcher), Austin (first baseman), Moon Bo-kyung (third baseman), Oh Ji-hwan (shortstop), Park Hae-min, Hong Chang-ki, and Moon Sung-joo (outfielders), and Kim Hyun-soo (designated hitter) were nominated. Most among 10 clubs.

LG will try to win the most Golden Gloves for a club in 22 years since 2001. Austin in the first baseman category and Hong Chang-ki in the outfielder category are favorites to win. Shortstop Oh Ji-hwan and catcher Park Dong-won will face stiff competition.

Austin played in 139 games this season, batting 3-for-163 (520 at-bats) with 23 home runs, 95 RBIs, 87 runs scored and an OPS of 0.893. Broke LG’s streak of foreign hitters and helped the organization win its first title in 29 years. In the Korean Series against KT, he went 3-for-5 (7-for-20) with one home run, five RBIs and three runs scored.

KT’s Park Byung-ho and Doosan’s Yang Seok-hwan are the other candidates for first base.

Byung-ho Park is 2-for-8 with three doubles, 18 home runs and 87 RBIs, while Yang is 2-for-8 with 21 home runs and 89 RBIs. Austin ranks third in RBI, third in home runs, third in on-base percentage, fourth in doubles, sixth in runs scored, and ninth in slugging percentage.

Hong played in 141 games, batting .333 with 65 RBI, 109 runs scored, and 23 stolen bases. He finished first in slugging percentage, first in runs scored, third in hits, third in batting average, and 11th in stolen bases.

There are three Golden Gloves for outfielders. Samsung Koo Ja-woo ranked second in batting average (.336), second in on-base percentage (.407) and fourth in slugging percentage (.494), while NC Park Gun-woo batted 3-for-9 (seventh), drove in 85 runs (ninth), 카지노사이트킴 had a .397 on-base percentage (fourth) and a .480 slugging percentage (sixth). SSG’s Heredia will contend for the award with a 3.023 batting average (5th), 76 RBI (15th) and 76 runs scored (13th), while KIA’s Socrates will be honored with a 2.085 batting average, 20 home runs (6th), 96 RBI (2nd) and 91 runs scored (5th).

Park Dong-won will try to win his first Golden Glove.

He’ll have to beat out regulars Yang Yang-ji of Doosan (eight wins) and Kang Min-ho of Samsung (six wins). Yang and Kang have alternately won the Golden Glove for catchers since 2011.

This year, Park batted .244 with 20 home runs (6th), 75 RBIs, and 54 runs scored. Kang Min-ho batted 2-for-6 with 16 homers, 77 RBIs and 60 runs scored, while Yang Yang-ji batted 3-for-5 with 17 homers, 68 RBIs and 56 runs scored.

Oh Ji-hwan, who won the Golden Glove last year, will try to win his second consecutive shortstop Golden Glove. He faces stiff competition from Kia’s Park Chan-ho. In the KBO’s new defense award this year, Oh Ji-hwan and Kia’s Park Chan-ho were named co-winners of the shortstop category.

Oh batted .268 with eight home runs, 62 RBIs, 65 runs scored, and 16 stolen bases.

Park Chan-ho batted 3-for-1 with three home runs, 52 RBIs, 73 runs scored, and 30 stolen bases (third). Their errors are tied at 14.

LG won three Golden Gloves in 2001 with Shin Yun-ho (pitcher), Lee Byung-kyu (outfielder), and Yang Jun-hyuk (designated hitter). The next most winners were Park Yong-taek (outfielder) and Lee Byung-kyu (designated hitter) in 2013.

After three consecutive years without a winner from 2014 to 2016, Park Yong-taek (designated hitter) in 2017, Kim Hyun-soo (outfielder) in 2020, Hong Chang-ki (outfielder) in 2021, and Oh Ji-hwan (shortstop) in 2022 continued the Golden Glove tradition. After winning the Korean Series for the first time in 29 years, LG is expecting three or four Golden Globe winners this year.

For pitchers, Golden Glove nominees must meet one of the following criteria: 10 or more wins, 30 or more saves, or 30 or more holds. Catchers and fielders are eligible if they have played at least 720 innings (team games X 5 innings) of defense at their respective positions. Designated hitters must bat at least 297 times, or two-thirds of their regular season at-bats, to be eligible.

The first-place finisher in each of the KBO’s regular-season individual categories will automatically be nominated for any position for which the criteria is met, regardless of eligibility. However, if a titleholder plays multiple positions and does not meet the defensive innings requirement at any of them, they will be nominated for the position where they played the most defensive innings. If you need to compare defensive innings and designated hitter at-bats, you will be nominated for the position with the higher percentage of each.
