Rooney on the tricky question: “Garnacho’s goal was better”
Rooney was asked about his iconic bicycle kick.
“Wayne Rooney has given his opinion on whether his famous bicycle kick against Manchester City surpasses Alejandro Garnacho’s similar technique at Goodison Park,” British media outlet Sports Bible reported on Jan. 1 (ET).
United advanced to the quarterfinals of the FA Cup with a dramatic 1-0 victory over Nottingham Forest in the Round of 16 of the 2023/24 season at The City Ground in Nottingham, England, on Sept. 29 (ET), thanks to a dramatic goal from Casemiro. Rooney was a pundit on BBC One for the match.
United won a free kick on the left flank in the 43rd minute of the second half, and Bruno Fernandes sent in a cross from the edge of the box that Casemiro only had to change direction to head home to make it 1-0 in dramatic fashion.
Casemiro’s goal received a similar VAR call to Van Dijk’s disallowed goal in the Carabao Cup final last week, but this time the VAR ruled that Baran was blocked rather than offside.
With the win, United kept their title hopes alive this season and will face rivals Liverpool in the quarterfinals in a North West derby. United also set a new record in the match, reaching the FA Cup quarterfinals for the 48th time, more than any other club.
Prior to the win over Nottingham, they were tied with Everton with 47 quarterfinal appearances. United have won the competition 12 times, second only to Arsenal (14).
Despite the win, United’s overall performance in the Premier League was somewhat concerning, with a loss to Fulham, and now they face their toughest test of the season against Manchester City at City’s home ground.
Rooney gave an honest preview of the Manchester derby. “We’ve scored a couple of goals, but it’s a really difficult game. City are a fantastic team, so it’s going to be a 카지노 big challenge for United at the weekend.”
During the broadcast, Rooney was also asked about his famous bicycle kick against Man City in 2011, which has been consistently compared to Alejandro Garnacho’s goal against Everton in November, and Rooney admitted that Garnacho’s goal could surpass the one he scored in the derby against Man City.
“I think Garnacho’s goal was better,” Rooney said.
United will now host City in the Manchester derby on March 4 (ET) and will face Liverpool in the FA Cup quarterfinals on March 17 (ET), again in a North West derby.
