The Atlanta Hawks have won the No. 1 pick for the first time in 49 years.
Atlanta secured the first overall pick in the 2024 NBA Rookie Draft Roundup held at McCormick Place West in Chicago on the 13th (Korea time). The Washington Wizards took the second pick, the Houston Rockets took the third and the San Antonio Spurs took the fourth pick.
Atlanta finished the 2023-2024 season 36-46 in 10th place in the Eastern Conference. The odds of winning the first place were only 3%. However, it beat the odds of 3 percent to win the first place.
Since the introduction of the rotary system in 1985, the team has overcome the fifth lowest probability ever. The team that picked the first place with the lowest probability ever was the 1993 Orlando Magic. It was a draft trade with Anfanny Hardaway after Chris Webber’s nomination. Next came the 2014 Cleveland Cavaliers with a 1.7% probability, 2008 Chicago Bulls, and 2011 Cleveland with a 2.8% probability.
It is the first pick in Atlanta’s history since 1975. At the time, Atlanta named David Thompson, but Thompson headed to the ABA.
The highest ranking since then was Marvin Williams, who was ranked second overall in 2005.
“It was shocking,” Atlanta general manager Landry Fields said. “As you can tell from the probability, it was successful just to see that we were not ranked between 10th and 12th. I was a little surprised, and I’m very excited.”
Along with securing Atlanta’s No. 1 pick, attention is focusing on whether the backcourt duo of Trae Young and DeJonte Murray will be disbanded. ESPN emphasized that “We have to make some critical decisions including whether to disband Young and Murray’s backcourt. We have to decide how to use our No. 1 pick.”
According to ESPN’s mock draft, French big man Alex Sarr is the top candidate. Other French names such as Zakari Lissache, Reed Shepherd, and Rob Dillingham (Kentucky).
Meanwhile, the Detroit Pistons, who had the best chance of 14%, only earned the fifth pick.
