KT Wiz looks forward to June of hope if it lasts just this week

KT Wiz, a professional baseball team that is enduring a difficult “barley head,” escaped from the crisis of four consecutive losses with a valuable victory over the powerful LG Twins last weekend.

Victory on the day was a valuable result of more than one win. Had the team lost, it would have fallen into the abyss again after suffering four consecutive losses, forcing it to stage an unwelcome competition to eliminate the last place.

In particular, with all but William Cuevas out of the lineup, the victory was achieved by the bullpen’s good pitching and the power of the batters, which means more than one win. Currently, KT’s starters, Ko Young-pyo, Wes Benjamin and Um Sang-baek, are out of injury and condition control, including So Hyung-joon, who underwent elbow ligament joint surgery last year.

In response, head coach Lee Kang-chul started rookie Won Won-hyun in the first game of the three consecutive home games against LG on the 17th, but he was dismissed early after allowing five runs, allowing seven hits and four walks in four ⅓ innings. Subsequently, on the 18th, Sowon, a bullpen resource, started as a temporary starter, but he lost the game by allowing five runs after eight hits in two ⅔ innings. It was regrettable that he missed the game that could have been won by a late explosion by the batters by one point.

Sung Jae-hun was also mentioned as an interim starter on Tuesday, but he threw two ⅔, allowing three hits (four walks) and three runs. However, KT came from behind to win the game 10-4. The driving force was mainly attributable to strong pitching by the bullpen and explosive power by the batters.

Son Dong-hyun, who took over the mound following Sung Jae-heon, pitched well with one hit and no run in three innings, and Kim Min-soo (⅓ innings), Kim Min (1 inning), and Lee Sang-dong (2 innings) continued to throw, supporting the batting line’s performance with just one run.

KT’s batting lineup has been showing good performance lately. Kang Baek-ho, Moon Sang-cheol, Mel Rojas Jr. and Park Byung-ho, Hwang Jae-gyun, Oh Yoon-seok, and Shin Bon-ki have recovered their batting performance recently, and center fielder Bae Jung-dae has returned from injury for the first time in 40 days to establish a well-organized batting lineup.

As shown in the LG Twins match on Sunday, if the bullpen persists despite the collapse of the starting mound, the team will be able to overcome the crisis by supporting the batters. It is expected that the starting lineup will be able to operate normally in June and play “starting baseball,” which is KT’s strength.

Following Um Sang-baek’s return this weekend, Benjamin and Ko Young-pyo are expected to return in early June, and So Hyung-joon is expected to join in the middle, so KT’s summer is expected to face a season of rebound as hot as last year.

KT will hold six consecutive games against Samsung and Kiwoom this week amid growing expectations whether it will be able to raise the prelude to the great rebound in June after a brutal April and May.

“If we persevere well this week, starting pitchers will return one by one from next week, and we expect to see a more stable rotation to rebound,” a KT source said. “It is important to maintain the current ranking this week.”
