Shin’s challenge is his second after para ice hockey, which he played with Captain Han Min-soo, the main character of the 2018 PyeongChang Paralympic bronze medal, in December last year.
The event was held with the intention that Shin Hyun-joon could learn and challenge wheelchair basketball with Coway Blue Wheels basketball players and approach the general public with a more friendly image of “sports for the disabled.”
Coway Blue Wheels wheelchair basketball team is a team with a number of national team players, including current national team coach Kim Young-moo, Yang Dong-gil, Kim Sang-yeol, Kwak Jun-sung and Lim Dong-ju.
Shin Hyun-joon spent time with the Coway Blue Wheels wheelchair basketball team learning basic postures such as “wheelchair walk” to “shooting” and “slalom.”
A graduate of Yonsei University’s physical education department, Shin was passionate about wheelchair basketball even though it was his first time encountering the sport. After passing the obstacle course in a cone and playing 3 to 3 real games with his players, Shin even scored a goal.
Shin said, “After experiencing wheelchair basketball in person, it’s harder than I thought, but I think the players who constantly create bright energy are amazing. I will eagerly support the Coway Blue Wheels Wheelchair Basketball Team.”
“I also want to challenge more various sports for the disabled in the future, following para ice hockey and wheelchair basketball,” he said, expressing his active interest in physical education for the disabled.
