According to the New York State Game Commission, New York’s commercial casinos were quite busy in January this year. Regulators say casinos, not four tribes, saw a 12% increase in gambling revenue compared to January 2022. The number was the highest since the introduction of mobile sports betting.
Currently, the state has four commercial casinos operating in the northern region: Reverse Casino & Resort Shenectadi, Tioga Downs Casino Resort, Del Lago Resort & Casino, and Resort World Catskills. Three more of these are under way in the northern part of the country, and the state is currently accepting applications from interested parties.
Total revenue from Empire State slots, retail sports betting, table games and poker reached US$54.5 million in January 2023, according to a report by the New York State Gaming Board. The figure represents a 12% increase over the same month last year, when revenues from four tribal casinos reached US$47.9 million.
All Empire State-based retail casino operators had relatively good year-on-year monthly revenue, except for Resorts World Catskill. Genting America Properties reported US$16.1 million in January 2023, a slight decrease from the same month in 2022 when the property reported revenue of approximately US$16.2 million.
Meanwhile, Reverse Casino & Resorts Shenectady disclosed revenue from slot and table games at $14.2 million, slightly more than in January 2022. Del Lago Resorts & Casino earned $10.4 million from last year, and Tioga Downs earned $12.3 million, slightly more than its 2022 results of $7.1 million.
For sports betting, Reverse Casino had the highest betting handle with sales of $4,435,505 and $388,419. Meanwhile, Thioga Downs posted a handle to US$739,583, and earnings of $115,180. Resorts World Catskills paid US$33,598 off the handle of US$1,706,687, while Delago posted a loss of US$10,649 on the volume of US$3,175,126.
Meanwhile, New York is working to accelerate the issuance of three other commercial licenses in the downtown area. In early January 2023, the gaming facility location committee, which is responsible for evaluating possible locations, began requesting applications. The Commission will review the tender and announce the three winners at the end of 2023.
Many candidates have already appeared and expressed interest in introducing commercial gaming properties in northern New York. Interested parties include Las Vegas Sands, Caesars Entertainment With SL Green, Rock Nation, and Soloviev Group. Recently, Soloviev Group selected Mohegan Gaming as a partner for a potential casino in Manhattan, New York.
