World No. 1 Ahn Se-young of South Korea won the women’s singles gold medal after defeating Chen

Yuefei (25-China, No. 3) 2-1 (21-18, 17-21, 21-8) in the women’s singles final of the badminton at the

Hangzhou Asian Games at Binjiang Gymnasium in Hangzhou, China on Sunday. Despite suffering an

injury to her right knee during the final, she fought her way to the top of the Asian podium. Previously,

the only South Korean to win an Asian Games badminton women’s singles gold medal was Hwang Su-

hyun at the 1994 Hiroshima Games. Ahn won her second title of the tournament after winning the team event on Day 1.

The meeting between Ahn and Chen Yufei

In the final was a special one. Five years ago, it was Chen Yufei who knocked Ahn out of the women’s

singles at the 2018 Jakarta-Palembang Games in her first match (round of 32). The 2021 Tokyo Olympics

women’s singles gold medalist has an 11-7 head-to-head record against Ahn, but this season, the South

Korean is 6-2. In the team final, Ahn won the first singles match 2-0 (21-12, 21-13).

Once again, Ahn had the upper hand in the match, but with a one-point lead at 18-17, things took a turn

for the worse. After flying to the floor several times during the match, Ahn complained of pain in her

right knee. Ahn grimaced and the medical staff came onto the court. She won the first set 21-18, but after

the set, she laid down on the court and rewrapped her knee.

In the second set

Ahn didn’t have much control over the match. At one point, the score was 5-12. Chen Yufei relentlessly

attacked Ahn’s right side. Luck was with Chen Yufei. The shuttlecock that hit the net landed on Yan’s side

of the court. Chen Yufei, who is from Hangzhou, the host city of the tournament, was cheered on by the fans in Anbang.

In the third set, Ahn came back to life. She raced to a 5-0 lead early in the set. Chen Yufei began to panic

as Ahn refused to go down. She gave away points in quick succession, and the game was quickly out of

reach at 18-8. After many long rallies, Chen Yufei seemed to have stood firm on the court and conceded

the 19th point to Ahn Se Young. Instead, Chen Yufei slumped to the court floor. After winning the 20th

point, Ahn raised her fist in victory. Chen Yufei’s attack then hit the net, ending the 90-minute battle. 스포츠토토링크
