Macao game sales increase in Q1 2023

The Macau government recently announced some excellent news about Macau’s gaming industry as a whole. Macau’s gaming tax revenue in March 2023 is higher than the same quarter last year.

Successful Q1:

In March 2023, the government earned $10.1 billion (or $1.25 billion) from the gaming industry. Compared to the same quarter last year, when sales were $8.7 billion (US$1.08 billion), the figure rose 15.8 percent.

The bureau released more accurate information about the problem. According to them, the country earned $1.58 billion ($196 million) in January, making it the lowest-earning month in the first quarter. In February, that amount rose to $4.51 billion ($559 million) and then to $4.02 billion ($498 million) in March.

After the COVID-19 pandemic, the gambling industry got into trouble. However, the situation seems to have changed during the first quarter of 2023. Measures to spread COVID-19 were active until December last year, when the government began to take one by one. On January 8 of this year, almost all border restrictions were abolished. Since then, the gambling industry has grown in popularity again in Macau.

In January, gaming revenue totaled $11.58 billion, or $1.44 billion. In the same month last year, revenue was 82.5% less than this year. However, in April, it increased to MOP dollars ($1.82 billion), up 450%.

Fantastic Total Game Sales Figures:

Macau’s total gaming revenue in the first quarter of 2023 was up 94.9% year-over-year, totaling $34.6 billion ($4.29 billion).

The gambling industry is one of the most important factors in Macau’s economy. The tax collection for the first quarter of 2023 is 19.9% of the government’s budgeted MOP of $50.9 billion ($6.31 billion).

The government has predicted that this year’s total gaming revenue will be 130 billion MOP dollars, or 16.1 billion US dollars. However, because that figure increased during the first quarter, these numbers are likely to be exceeded, which will mean a lot for Macau’s economic growth.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, the region has lost a lot of power as one of the major hubs of the South Asian region, as it was making major gains from tourists from China and Hong Kong. Tourists were not allowed to enter Macau for a long time, which significantly reduced the region’s total gaming revenue. However, things appear to have changed.
