In 2022, the China Payments and Settlements Association said in its annual report submitted online on Thursday that it had helped its member organization block payments worth nearly 2 billion yuan ($277 million) that were known to be for gambling activities. It did not specify the type of gambling activity involved.
The society is described as a non-profit organization overseen by the People’s Bank of China. Membership includes banks, other financial institutions, financial technology (Fintech) companies, and licensed non-bank payment institutions.
“More than 60,000 suspected gambling transactions were detected in 2022,” the report said.
The association also identified “4,292” payment accounts in 2022 and noted that “54 merchants” were involved in gambling activities. It did not elaborate on how they were caught.
In recent years, many government departments in mainland China have issued statements about cracking down on citizens traveling abroad to play casinos or engaging in betting.
China’s revised criminal law makes it illegal to help others. It took effect on March 1, 2021.
